When our adult child is a stranger

When our adult child becomes someone we no longer know,

A stranger, unfamiliar, unknown, leaving us feeling lost, alone.

Sometimes they follow our steps, mirroring our ways,

Mistakes are made, lessons are learned through the years,

But sometimes, changes bring forth unforeseen fears.

As a mother, anger may cloud your view it clouds mine too,

They grow up, these children of our own,

Sometimes reflecting what we have shown.

We try our best to be their guide.

Even the flaws, the mistakes they repeat,

Leaving you wondering how it came to this beat.

As a father, the distance might taint what’s true.

As our children transform, we strive to guide,

Nurturing them when they are young, standing by their side.

We raise a child to walk in the way we believe best.

Yet we stumble, we err, we make mistakes,

Sometimes with anger or distance, our own heartaches

We raised them with our love, our hopes, our guiding light,

As the years unfold, they grow, they transform,

The children we knew, their essence takes a new form.

When an adult child becomes someone you no longer know.

The familiar moments, the cherished memories,

First steps, bike rides, teaching A, B, C’s,

They make mistakes, and they try their best.

Our babies linger in our hearts, as we witness the shift,

Wondering where it stems from, this unexpected rift.

we stumble and make mistakes, causing some pain.

We mourn the good times, feeling shades of blue,

Wishing for the child we once thought we knew.

twists and turns appear the ones we held so dear.

We search for understanding, sometimes in vain,

Yet deep down, we yearn for a connection to regain.

A chill settles within, as our hearts turn to stone,

Amidst the hurt and sadness, allow yourself to feel,

Know that healing awaits, and happiness will reveal.

Remember them as they were, accept them as they are.

When our adult child becomes someone we no longer know.
