Reflecting on the Rainbow: from The Book (work in progress)

Sarah sat at her desk, a pen in hand, carefully crafting her words. She wanted to express the emotions swirling within her, the thoughts that had been weighing on her mind. Her neighbor, David, an elderly man with a gentle spirit, had become a dear friend and today, she felt compelled to share her musings with him. She had been reading the bible during school lunch and had tolerated the scoffs of a few passing children, but it was the rejection from her family that pained her the most. How could something that brought her so much joy also cause so much pain?

As Sarah thought about God’s promise of hope in the symbol of the rainbow, she began to compose.

“The rainbow is a dream,” Sarah wrote, her words flowing onto the paper. “A child’s happy dream, full of color and beauty and life. But like all dreams, even a child’s happy dream, it fades until only dark clouds remain.”

Sarah paused, her eyes fixed on the words she had just penned. She wondered if she was capturing the essence of her feelings accurately. She wanted David to understand the bittersweetness she was experiencing, the realization that even the most vibrant dreams could fade with time. She wondered if the promises of God were, after all, only an illusion, like the rainbow, fading in time.

With a determined nod, Sarah continued her note. Sarah’s hand moved across the paper, her thoughts flowing freely. She felt a sense of comfort, knowing that David would appreciate her heartfelt words. She wanted him to know that she valued their friendship and the wisdom he imparted. He accepted her without judgment.

Satisfied with her note, Sarah folded it carefully, tucking it inside a pale yellow envelope. She walked over to David’s house, the envelope clutched in her hand. The sun was setting, casting a warm glow over the neighborhood as she approached his front door.

David opened the door with a kind smile, his eyes reflecting the wisdom of many years. Sarah handed him the envelope, her heart filled with anticipation. She knew he would understand the emotions behind her words.

David accepted the envelope, his gaze gentle and knowing. He invited Sarah inside, and together they sat in his cozy living room, surrounded by shelves filled with books and the soft, rhythmic ticking of an old clock.

After reading the note, David looked at Sarah, his eyes twinkling. “My dear,” he began, his voice a soothing melody, “your words capture the ebb and flow of life. The rainbow, indeed, is a dream that appears and disappears, reminding us of the cycles we all experience. But it’s essential to remember that after every storm, it returns, brighter than ever.”

David picked up a pen from the side table. He turned her letter over and began to write. “Don’t forget, after every storm, the rainbow reappears, brighter than before. It reminds us to hold on, to hope for a better day, to see the beauty in life even when it seems far away. So when the dark clouds come, and the rainbow disappears,” David wrote, his voice echoing in the ink, “remember it’s just a dream, waiting to reappear.” David handed the letter back to Sarah.

Sarah nodded, taking in David’s wisdom. She felt a renewed sense of hope, knowing that even when life seemed clouded, beauty and joy would find their way back.

“Thank you, David,” she whispered, gratitude filling her heart.

They sat together, sharing stories and thoughts, basking in the warmth of their friendship. And as the evening enveloped them, Sarah realized that the bond they shared, like the reappearing rainbow, would continue to illuminate their lives, even through the darkest storms.
