News Poetry: A UN Report

In Afghanistan, because of US, turmoil reigns,
Women and children bear the weight of pains.
A thousand souls since we abandoned the fight,
UN reports an age of darkness, a dawn of night.

Attacks by the Taliban, increase to a tragic toll,
Civilians are targeted, women, children, and lives stole.
Unclaimed horrors, not part of the tally, a significant count,
Unknown perpetrators, they claim amidst mountains of doubt.

Three thousand seven hundred and seventy-four,
Casualties of war, civilians, hearts left sore.
Among them, women and innocent youth,
Their lives are shattered, hidden by untruth.

Schools and worship places, a target’s aim,
IED explosions more than ever, a nation in flame.
Shiite Muslims suffer genocide, a minority’s plight,
Terror at the hands of the Taliban in the cover of night.

Ninety-five lives were lost in the halls of education,
Children were robbed of hope, a devastating revelation.
The Hazara community, a target of genocide once again,
Their pain echoes, heard by no one, and their cries sustain.

Within the Islamic State, the dark shadow of extremism looms,
The Taliban, faces no rivals, freely spreading gloom.
Attacks on their own civilians, women, and children, acts so vile,
Reprehensible deeds, human decency, these demons defile.

The Politicians are to be blamed for this human rights plight,
The radicals played the political game, a narrative to ignite.
But the suffering of the Afghan women and children remains,
America would not see beyond political battles and partisan gains.
