News Poetry: Fired for teaching biology

In a world where knowledge should thrive,
Where science’s light helps us survive,
A biology professor, a victim caught,
In the cross-hairs of radical thought.

Teaching biology, a noble pursuit,
To enlighten minds, explore the truth.
But now, they try to silence his voice,
His passion for learning, they seek to destroy.

Radicals, with their agenda in tow,
Eliminate terms, as the winds blow.
Male and female, words under attack,
Replacing them, oh, what a tangled track.

“Sperm-producing” and “egg-producing,” they say,
The far left claims it’s the only right way.
Colonialism, supremacy, and patriarchy they claim to fight
A web of theories, a web of lies, knots tied so tight.

Amidst this chaos, let’s take a look,
At St. Philip’s College, a page from the book.
A biology professor, Johnson Varkey by name,
Fired for teaching biology, what a shame.

For over two decades, he shared his knowledge,
An expert in his field, was respected in college.
In a lecture on reproduction’s design,
He stated a fact, one so benign.

Two chromosomes, X and Y, he unveiled,
Determining sex, as science has hailed.
Yet students stormed out, voices raised,
Complaints set the administration, a craze!

Discriminatory comments they claim,
Preaching rhetoric of disdain,
Misogynistic banter, is science to blame?
Willing to say anything their beliefs to sustain,

But Varkey’s teaching wasn’t driven by faith,
He spoke the truth, without any wraith.
Men with X and Y, women with X and X,
A scientific fact, no ideological vex.

To ask him to bend, to yield to their creed,
Absurdity, as reason starts to recede.
Varkey, fights, his lawsuit takes flight,
Seeking justice, a beacon in the night.

biology’s essence, it knows no bounds,
Let knowledge flourish, as truth resounds.
Let sanity and science prevail in the end,
In the halls of academia, let truth transcend.
