I Need To Write

I need to write twenty poems
I don’t care if they are good-
If they make you cry-
or vomit like a woman
who does not yet know she is a mother.

I need to write twenty poems
While dinner simmers and laundry waits,
maybe about how it smells like
it’s going to rain outside, or about
the dog’s rusty chain-
as I carry the groceries in from the car.

I need to write twenty poems
to market, to market to-
read a fat poem.
Not twenty words, not twenty lines,
just twenty poems
as my husband puts the groceries away.
I will memorize them in my mind
as I walk the dog.
