I dream a dream: age 14

by Sally Ann Houston

I dream a dream free from sorrow.

It’s a dream of love and joyous dance.

It is a dream about tomorrow

of happy thoughts and a loving glance.

A dream where children have no fears,

and stones don’t fly to strike the bird.

In this dream, there are no tears.

It is a dream to be heard…

A child cries alone at night

and most who hear that child’s cry

screaming out in horrid fright

shudder at the sound as they pass by.

but when someone comes to their door

“I heard nothing.” they will say.

They will lie, and their conscience ignore

and think not again of that day.

And yet not far away from there

is laughter and a sense of cheer.

There is truth and love where peace is near

from evil and hatred, there is no fear

It is a dream that everyone dreams

of peace and joy and truth.

No matter how hopeless it sometimes seems

it is the elders who teach the youth.

You can leave it to the next generation

just as they left it to you.

But that doesn’t solve any problems

and it doesn’t make dreams come true.
