Civilization: age 15

by Sally Ann Houston

Life is an insanity of cruelty and destruction.

All is wild in this so-called civilization.

We are only children, in our immaturity,

armed with sharpened sticks and stones.

There is no real difference between the immaturity of a child

and the so-called “maturity” of an adult.

It is all the same in one and the other.

In both worlds, the insanity continues.

The cruelty and destruction of young and old,

What is left of them at least and of us.

In this world of man as children, we play at war

until it is not a game anymore but anger and frustration.

In this world of man as adults, we play at war.

We kill each other and us in this useless blindness of insanity.

For we are yet little children or more so wild animals

armed with submachine guns and nuclear bombs.

For as long as there is man there will be war

and never this so-called civilization.
