Come little children unaware.
Let us plant some flowers in the village square.
There is no place to gather here.
The village is quiet and the park is bare.
Let us gather the Elders at dinner hour.
Let us ask to build a playground.
Tell them… we will plant the flowers.
So they can play on a merry-go-round.
Go ask the restaurateur, he’ll gather his friends.
the ladies he’ll call honey.
He’ll wine and dine them, his friends.
and He’ll give you the money.
Although it’s not his money to give.
It belongs to a friend from away.
But his friend will come here to live.
We’ll have lots of friends someday.
Come little children unaware
We’ll give you flowers to make the park pretty.
Our friends need a place to stay.
Just give us your hours to build us a city.
Gather the Elders together so they can hear.
What friends of fair weather have to say.
Let us build a playground in the square.
For the weather is fair today.
Go ask the storekeeper, He is a generous fellow.
“A good friend”, I’ve heard his friends say.
He works for his brother. They keep it mellow.
He’s an only child, I heard a friend say.
His friends give him money
that he spends on his friends.
The ladies call him Honey.
He has lots of lady friends.
I saw him with the senator just the other day.
But they didn’t stay long.
They went off some were to play.
And then the senator was gone.
Come little children unaware.
The village is quiet today.
Let us build a playground in the square.
A place for friends to play.
Bring the Elders to dinner
and while sitting at their plate,
ask them for your inheritance.
It is your right. It is your fate.
Go ask the Innkeeper, a fair-weather resident.
His friends always say, “He knows what to say.”
and his brother knows the American President.
He’s in the picture on the wall, how they play.
No resemblance between the keeper
and his brother?
I can’t quite recall his name.
Italian or Greek, It was one or the other.
Though the Innkeeper’s name is plain.
Once the brother came to Maine
but he stayed so few hours.
There was no place to play his game,
no playground with flowers.
Come little children unaware.
Plant the flowers while it is still sunny.
Give them to your friends to share.
We can sell them to make us more money.
Gather the elders in the village square.
we need a place to play.
there is no place to gather here.
where our friends can stay.
Go ask the landlord, he has lots of friends.
His brother will pay the way.
He’ll buy the flowers and the homes of the elders
so friends will have a place to stay.
You’ll have no better friends than us,
we’re a family, you can’t go wrong.
We will share the village with you
When the Elders are gone.
There will be plenty of room for you.
After your inheritance you share.
See how friendly we are to you.
We’ll all play ball to show we care.
Come little children unaware.
we will give you a place to play.
You’ll have lots of friends here
when the elders go away.
Gather the elders, wine, and dine them
and have them sell their land.
They will give it to their children.
friends wash each other’s hands.
Go ask the Mayor.
He is a man of care.
I saw him with the Governor
I was trying not to stare.
He’ll wine you and dine you.
You can play ball.
He’ll give you and he’ll get you,
and his friends will get all.
The Mayor has no brother.
He is a restaurateur,
and he is all of the others
and he is never a bore.
Go ask the money train, He owns the village,
but you planted the flowers that he sold.
You’ll find him at the store counting the pillage.
Now that the Elders are just old.
Come little children unaware.
The land has been conveyed
Your inheritance is all shared
With the man from away
There is land enough for all our friends.
We thank you for your care.
But you can’t be our friend,
you have nothing left to share.
We have a village playground.
A place to gather and a place to stay.
We don’t need you around.
Now go away little children. Go away!
