I was always a Card

I was always a Card
In the Game of Life I sought to find my suit,
A family of cards that could be my root,
to teach me the rules of the game,
and the tricks that would earn me fame.
I asked lucky seven, as I put the deck behind me,
“What mark, what suit, could best serve and define me”
He paused, then spoke his worth,
“Are you like the dark of the earth,
like spades that dig in the ground so deep,
or clovers that grow across valleys and creep
or are you bright, like diamonds that gleam,
or like the heart that beats a passionate dream?
What mark calls to you, where do you belong?
In the digging, the growing, the hard, or the strong?”
I pondered his words, let them sink in slow,
as I searched for the suit where my game might grow,
“or are you better defined by a number, two through ten
or do you rise beyond the ranks of numbers, then…”
“I am not just a number,” interrupting, I proclaimed,
“I am a face, with value with a destiny named.”
A face card, worthy of a crown, queen of spades?
I tried to play that card but I dug my own grave,
Her dark embrace pulled me down,
In a world where only shadows wear a crown.
The clover queen? That wasn’t my way,
nothing I grew would ever stay,
Maybe the queen of diamonds, in a world so cold,
where wealth is worshipped, and lives are sold,
but money was never my guiding star,
its glittering promises fell too far.
the heart then, a queen in search of a king,
but to my ear, love’s illusions lost their ring,
for though I yearned, it wasn’t me,
A queen of hearts I could never be.
Then I gazed into a mirror, saw my face,
intricately designed, I was an Ace.
Not just a number, nor a queen to reign,
But a card untethered by the world’s domain.
The Ace of Hearts, a romantic from start to Fin
With an Ace up my sleeve, I would always win!
