Souls Drugs/Lost Hush/Thunder Bay/In Name Only

Souls Drugs
Souls regret.
Fishermen.
Fate’s tide turns dark.
Unnamed addict’s debt.
Drugs.

Lost Hush
Lost.
Lobster fishermen
sink in nightmares.
Drugs in the water.
Hush.

Since 2020, the drug trade in rural areas like Maine has been heavily influenced by the opioid crisis, which has evolved with the rise of synthetic opioids such as fentanyl. While Maine’s fishing industry, like that of other coastal regions, remains culturally significant, many of these tight-knit communities have been devastated by addiction.

Thunder Bay
Maine mussels, sea cucumbers, and Thunder Bay,
Steel draggers for everyone.
The Cove witnessed their birth, with pride,
Where fishermen once sailed by day.
The honest dollar grew, until the dead-man’s son…
as the fishing fleet set out, they lost their guide.

Even in rural areas entire communities are being swept up in the drug crisis, with the drug trade infiltrating areas that were once largely untouched. The economic challenges in these areas create an environment where drugs can take hold, as desperation often leads people to seek relief or escape through substances.

In Name Only
As the vessels sink in a sea of regret,
They are fishermen in name only.
Fate twists with this darkening tide,
shifting to Maine muscle and an addict’s debt.
The fishermen’s sons gather around the bonfire,
the many unnamed with secrets to hide.
