Gene Pool

The gene pool’s deep, or so they say,
But no lifeguard stands to save the day.
We’re left to swim, or sink below,
In waters where mutations grow.

Some dive right in, without a care,
While others drown in thin despair.
A ripple here, a splash of chance,
A game of fate, a clumsy stance.

With every stroke, a change is made,
In murky depths where traits cascade.
Survival’s luck, or nature’s schemes,
It might leave you floating, chasing genes

Yet still we swim, or tread the line,
In science where randomness is design.
No lifeguard’s there to guide our fate,
Just genes at play, with innate twists.

So here we are, both strong and frail,
A drifting mass where entropy avails.
The gene pool is vast, its depths un-shown,
But it’s the only pool we’ve ever known.
