Pick Up the Word and Eat

The truths of Scripture, a delicate art,
For imperfect people with imperfect hearts.
It’s not as simple as a verse to glean,
Each word is woven in a greater scene.
Beyond the lines, a genre speaks,
A voice divine, yet humanly meek.
For God’s intent in every page
Requires a wisdom beyond our age.
The unsaved mind, a blinded view,
Can’t grasp the spiritual meant for the few.
Yet even we, Spirit-filled though we be,
Are marred by bias, too blind to see.
We trust in teachers, wise and kind,
But even they are flawed by mind.
Traditions rise, and doctrines grow,
But sheep-like, we follow the path we know.
So I return, again and again,
To God’s own Word, to seek, to mend.
I listen to scholars, diverse and wise,
To challenge my views, to open my eyes.
For popularity, a dangerous tide,
Can sweep us away, can lead us aside.
The simplicity praised, while faith grows thin,
Leaves truth obscured where doubt begins.
Explain the “isms,” the creeds, the stands,
But truth’s foundation rests in God’s hands.
No teacher’s voice, no doctrinal pride,
Replaces the Word, where wisdom abides.
Pick up the Bible, taste and see,
A timeless feast for you and me.
In context read, in prayer discern,
Each page a flame for hearts that yearn.
Neglect it not, for life is there,
God’s breath, His voice, beyond compare.
Humbly seek, with faith replete—
Pick up your Bible and eat!
