Christmas At Auschwitz

Christmas At Auschwitz

While Christmas Eve carols hung in the air,
Cigarettes and whiskey and the disorderly spin,
I saw him buying the Whore of Comfort; and Despair
was dancing with Sorrow at what could have been.

The Demon named Despair with its haunting song,
sang of the crippled and others ailing that lined the path,
The Doctor’s prognosis: I’ve lingered too long—
I thought of crossing the ocean to escape the wrath.

Admonitions to a special person rang in my ears,
again and again and again, the past rewinds,
Will they remember Auschwitz, the weight of years?
All the pretty ones are etched in my mind.
