Farewell at Daybreak

Farewell at Daybreak

A burnt ship smolders on the tide,
its fevered wreck a love denied.
Nocturnal hours, cold and wan,
drift upon the seaside dawn.

The coal-black ring sent, a token worn,
now marks the hand of one fore sworn.
Yet air and shadows press between,
confined love where love has been.

Disinherited, the heart must roam,
a tale of citizens turned to stone.
Of weeping, perfume lingers long,
anatomy of loss in song.

His picture fades—his parting true,
etched in glass where morning drew.
So let me leave, forbidding mourning,
change the word read of yearning.

For even autumn’s gold must wane,
and death, be not so proud again.
