A Gathering Lament

A Gathering Lament
Gathering black, the storm clouds swell,
Farewell to the Muse, her voice grown still,
Farewell! Farewell!—a tolling knell.
A funeral hymn on the crest of the hill.

In a lyrical land ink rivers run,
and on seeing my two children sleeping,
as I roamed lost, my kingdom was undone.
The sight brought back times of tender keeping.

Hell looms close in sorrow’s shade,
Hunting solace in minds memory—grief,
Yet here’s wellbeing to love, unswayed.
A lullaby for an infant chief.

It was a whitewashed lady bright
That wrote of loss upon the page.
Who wept beneath the failing light,
like an oak tree, bowed with age.
