Sanctuary of Ocean and Cliff
Columns of granite rise vast, eternal, tall,
Like frozen giants answering heaven’s call.
Their cliffs soar, as though the skies they press,
And lift the spirit upward to confess.
Beyond a cavern’s gate, a grotto lies,
Its walls with shells inlaid like ocean’s prize—
Periwinkles and limpets, fragments shining bright,
As jewels that gleam beneath the moon’s soft light.
The roof above curves like a sea-shell dome,
A mossy cave, a cool, secluded home.
Thick kelp spills, a curtain green and free,
A refuge from the burning sun’s decree.
Here dwell the spirits of the spring and pool,
Of wells, of brooks where silver waters rule.
They feed the starfish, glinting as they run,
And swell on the rocks that glimmer in the sun.
As the ocean winds blow through eastern skies,
And darkened currents proud before us rise.
Our eyes like sunlit waves, they glisten and gleam,
Bright sparks of wonder stirring heart and dream.
Then spread beyond, a vision fair, immense:
Hill, vale, and mountain rolling without fence,
Till on the far horizon’s rim are shown
The plains and peaks beneath a sky full-grown.
