The Library Beneath

The Library Beneath

A passage cut deep into the rock,
carved in earth so deep,
Fashioned by nature herself,
By nature’s hand, her craft to keep,
In the dawn of time
Wrought when earth was new,
Here, the walls reveal layers
Where ancient secrets pierce the view
of clay and calcite,
walls display in a banded line,
bands of soil, fossils sealed in stone,
Clay, calcite, soil in mute design;
Fossils rest in stony beds,
The record of ages
Words the buried ages said.
A silent library, vast, profound,
stacked in silence,
Where history sleeps beneath the ground;
undisturbed, a library of earth.
Its pages stacked in hushed grace,
The record of the Earth’s long embrace.
