Antipoem
An antipoem is a type of poetry that deliberately rejects traditional poetic norms, such as elevated language, rhythm, and romanticized themes. It often embraces colloquial speech, irony, humor, absurdity, and everyday realism to challenge conventional poetic expectations. The term is closely associated with Chilean poet Nicanor Parra, who popularized the genre.
Ode to My Coffee Cup
My favorite mug—
with stained brown line inside,
you hold my morning together
(and yesterday’s coffee if I forget to rinse).
Poets write of love, loss, the beauty of sunrise—
but honestly, without you, I’d see none of it.
This poem avoids flowery language and elevated themes, instead using humor and casual speech to create an ironic “ode” to something mundane.
