Assonance
An assonance poem is defined by the repetition of vowel sounds in nearby words. These repeated vowels can appear in any part of the word, either stressed or unstressed, and create a sense of harmony or resonance. Assonance enhances the musicality of a poem, emphasizing its mood or tone without being reliant on rhyme.
Maine Waters
The moon’s cool glow soothes the open sea,
Where loons croon low, adrift in harmony.
Waves flow, slow and free, beneath the night,
A lone boat rows, basking in pale light.
In this example, the repetition of the “oo” and “o” sounds creates assonance, contributing to the peaceful and flowing atmosphere of the scene. The assonance enhances the tranquil mood, evoking the calmness of the sea and the gentle passage of time.
