Wax Orange Fluxus Performance and Art

A waxed orange can qualify as Fluxus if it is presented according to Fluxus principles: everyday material made into art through context, instruction, action, chance, or audience participation.

Fluxus emphasized using ordinary objects, blurring art and life, performance or event scores, and chance or playful anti‑art gestures rather than polished objects. An orange made strange by wax becomes a ready Fluxus object when it is framed as a happening, a score, or an instruction that invites action or interruption.

This particula orange had a bad spot so I cut off its top. Then decided to scoop out the orange and dehydrating the peel. (kind of like a cup) I then decided to cover it in layers of scented wax. I used square art paper sketches as a base and backing. I posted this to the Fluxus Facebook group and was pleased to see the interpretations which gave me the idea of photoshoping the Orange as the scream painting and inviting others to find other ideas for the Waxed Orange.

Anyone else want to find a new use for this Waxed Orange?

I will be continueing this study through these other ways of participating in Waxed Orange Fluxus performance.
Still life series — Photographing the orange in different lightings (glossy, matte, backlit) to emphasize the uncanny skin.

Diptych pairing — Pairing the waxed orange image with a raw orange photo; titling the pair Before / After.

Surreal collage — Composite the orange into unexpected contexts (museum work, supermarket ad, nature scenes) to make a short visual essay.
