I Once Called You Friend

As children we ran across the field and through a wood lot,
to play in an abandoned house, where we knew we should not.
I called you friend, and this forbidden spot was our domain,
It was the summer’s end, I should have known friends do not remain.
We once had a kingdom, and in our imagination, we ruled as one,
Even then I should have known, time’s swift march had begun.
Years flew by, you forgot my name but I returned to see,
The place where I remembered you and we shared memories.
A fortress of friendship, once stood so strong,
Now it lay in ruins, its glory all gone.
Three walls of stone, wood weathered and decayed,
It was no longer a home, abandonment was now displayed.
Red bricks, scattered, glass, broken, memories, gone,
A glimpse of a world that had moved on.
A sting of tears, my memories pained,
The walls crumbled, and friendship strained.
Time has proved no friend, all of our plans, fell apart,
Joy comes to an end. leaving memories and a broken heart.
Even as we drift and grow, though journeys end,
I thought you would want to know, I once called you friend.
