Roses, Violets and Clover (a song)

Roses, violets, and clover

grow over the rolling river.

have you been to Birmingham?

There has journeyed my gentleman.

He promised me a wild bouquet

to adorn our wedding day,

of roses, violets, and clover.

Roses, violets, and clover

grow over the rolling river.

I met my love in Birmingham

over the rolling river.

His love he revealed in a fragrant field

of roses, violets, and clover.

Roses, violets, and clover

grow over the rolling river.

In Birmingham, a promise made,

Of a wild bouquet, love conveyed,

Of roses, violets, and clover,

to be a symbol of forever.

Roses, violets, and clover

grow over the rolling river.

I am afraid that he is gone

over the rolling river,

Far beyond the gates of Birmingham

no bouquet will he deliver

of roses, violets, and clover.

Still, nature’s beauty remains,

A reminder of love’s bitter refrain,

Roses, violets, and clover

grow over the rolling river.

Roses, violets, and clover

grow over the rolling river.

    1. I had a period of time in my early twenties where I was working all the time (80 hours a week some years) but my mind still was writing poetry so I had to put it to music and sing it over and over again to memorize it until I could get to a piece of scrap paper to write it down. This is why a lot of my poems around the age of 25 were written as songs.
