Free verse is a form of poetry that does not adhere to a specific rhyme scheme or metrical pattern. It allows poets the freedom to express their thoughts and emotions without the constraints of traditional poetic forms. Key characteristics include:
Irregular Line Lengths: Lines can vary significantly in length, contributing to the poem’s overall rhythm and flow.
Lack of Rhyme: There is no predetermined rhyme scheme, though poets may choose to incorporate occasional rhymes for effect.
Natural Speech Patterns: The language often mimics natural speech, allowing for a conversational tone and more personal expression.
Imagery and Emotion: Free verse often emphasizes imagery and emotional resonance rather than formal structure, allowing poets to explore complex themes and ideas freely.
Overall, free verse provides a flexible framework for creativity and self-expression, making it a popular choice among modern poets.
A Golden Dream
A golden dream of fame I chose to leave untried—
For fear of flames, I stayed upon this shore,
Yet I softly smile to hear the hearths theme,
Because I didn’t want to burn the bridge of fate.
Yet still, I dream of crossing to be free,
Yet still in warmth and bliss my heart does soar,
While time slips by—my life without risk,
I feast on enough, not caring what I’ve lost.
I saw the flame of fame, not crossing over—just a dream,
For though with want I once sought something more,
Through time it must be learned, my heart feels light.
Known, I walk where seashells gather. My path my own.
Oh dear, I fear, I held too near to this side of the tide,
Yet I celebrate this comfort evermore—
Like laughter dancing, soft with golden hue,
All my joys, they rise! My choices make me free.
