I count the bells before they claim the square.
Their bronze divides the market into sound.
The baker sends a sleeve of flour through air.
A child draws smaller circles on the ground.
One letter turns the count I keep to court.
The bells convene; the pigeons form a case.
A fountain offers splashes in support.
The wind submits a leaf and leaves its place.
But who has made the listening into law?
The child steps through a circle with one shoe.
No clerk records the opening I saw.
The chalk permits the foot to wander through.
I count again, but leave one number free.
The unstruck bell reserves a turn for me.
